Frequently asked questions.

Q: Why do you only work 1-1?

A: I only work on a 1-1 basis so you and your puppy/dog get 100% of my time and attention My training and behaviour plans are unique to your puppy/dog, because one size does NOT fit all! Some puppies/dogs do well in group sessions, but they can be overwhelming to many, especially those with dog related issues such as reactivity or a previous traumatic incident. I believe results are achieved much faster when working individually and supervised, structured socialisation sessions with other dogs can always be planned as part of a training schedule.

Q: What if I need more help after my course?

A: I support my clients throughout their course and even though the homework is for you to complete with your puppy/dog, I never want anyone to feel left to their own devices and email support is available throughout courses. All courses summarise with a follow up session to evaluate progress and we can easily make a plan from here to deal with anything you feel needs more attention. All clients can add flexible ‘pay as you go’ sessions at an hourly rate to continue their progress or deal with a specific issue,

Q. What methods do you use?

A: Positive, reward based training based on science led methods - backed up by research. No second guessing, no old fashioned aversive techniques using outdated information, no gadgets and definitely no force. The emphasis is on making learning fun with the flexibility to adapt training to your puppy/dog. All work is dog centred with gradual progression at your puppy/dog’s pace to avoid overwhelm, and where possible gives the dog choices.

Q: Why do you work remotely?

A: Offering remote help via online sessions is a thorough, flexible way to work. Sessions can fit in around your work/life commitments and often saves clients money and time by addressing issues quickly and directly. Often, puppies and dogs exhibiting training or behavioural issues will act differently when a third person is present, and the issue you are having may not be displayed with in-person visits. Sometimes, the puppy/dog may feel unsettled with a new person around and this can add complexity or compound certain issues.

Using comprehensive fact finding and thorough initial consultations, including video footage if applicable, enables me to get a very detailed picture of your situation without distraction. I can then offer personalised help and advice tailored to your puppy/dog and your lifestyle, leaving you free to concentrate on what matters, not feeling anxious or frustrated that the issue you called me out for is not on display! By working remotely I can see issues from your perspective, not mine, and that is so important in implementing changes to improve YOUR relationship with your canine friend.

Working online means new puppy/dog clients can be well prepared even before the new arrival appears! Getting a head start is hugely beneficial to be able to prepare, establish good habits, and build strong foundations.

Q Will this definitely help my puppy/dog?

A: No trainer/behaviourist can guarantee specific results, but I always strive to achieve positive changes and offer all my knowledge and support to reach achievable goals with you and your puppy/dog. As with most things in life, you get out what you put in, and owners are required to put in work at home in-between sessions. I offer regular support opportunities to check in with how things are going and give you the best possible chance of success, and ‘pay as you go’ options are available if you feel your dog needs more sessions after your course is completed.

Q Do I need a veterinary referral for behaviour work?

A: My behavioural work via the Behavioural First Aid course does not represent a full behavioural consultation for established issues. It is a first-response guidance for behavioural challenges when they initially arise and is not suitable for a dog with a bite history. If, after our initial discovery call, I feel the issues your puppy/dog is displaying could stem from a clinical cause then I will advise veterinary referral. If any of the signs your puppy/dog is showing seem to stem from well established, deeper emotional, psychological or clinical needs - beyond what this service can offer, I will refer to a trusted colleague and in that situation clinical assessment from a veterinary professional is required. Some medical issues can cause or compound behavioural issues so it is really important to exclude pain as a reason, and accredited behaviourists always work from referral.

Q. Can you help with specific behavioural problems?

A: It depends what the issue is.  Get in touch to discuss your dog’s needs and I’ll let you know whether I can help or I’ll be happy to refer you on to another trusted colleague.  I will always do what I feel is right for your dog, even if that means ‘losing work’ myself!

Q. Can I work on more than one issue?

A. Often dogs can present multiple undesirable behaviours. I would advise you pick the biggest issue first for us to work on and then we can always add extra sessions to deal with anything further. Often, the tips I teach you can be used across other situations, so you may find working on the biggest issue helps to work through some of the smaller ones!

Q. Can I claim on insurance?

Possibly - it depends on your insurance terms and each company is different. Many companies will pay out for the services of an accredited professional. Clients usually pay for services and then claim back from your insurance company. If you are dependent on a claim to fund your sessions I would always advise you to contact your insurance providers in the first instance.
